He was predeceased by: his siblings, Billy Darrell Freeman and Peggy Ann Burroughs; and his sons-in-law, Phil Thompson and Jim Rainey. He is survived by: his wife Frances Haywood Freeman; his children, Dodie Atkins (Jeff) of Troy, Juanita Thompson of Troy and Tonya Rainey of Jackson Springs; his stepchildren, Barbara Jean Shepherd of Pinehurst, Edwin Arnold "Jay" Shepherd (Rebecca) of Candor and Chris Michael Shepherd (Leann) of Mt. Gilead; his grandchildren, Jennifer Atkins of Troy, Austin Thompson Blondin of Knightdale, NC, Sabrina Webb of Abilene, TX, Kelsey Atkins of Troy and Brittany Thompson of Troy; his great grandchildren, Oliver and Jackson Cowell; his stepgrandchildren, Carrie Bruton of Robbins, Savannah Shepherd, Katie Shepherd, Hunter Shepherd of Biscoe, Lillian Turner Poole of Albemarle and Elizabeth Shepherd of Candor; and his siblings, Helen Margaret Winters and Peter "Pat" Freeman (Arlene).
