He is survived by: his wife Roma Sowards; his children, Cindy Torres (Steve) of Brandywine, MD, Kathy Thorpe (Jay) of Glen Burnie, MD, Christina Weaver (Pete) of Crownsville, MD, Gloria Sowards of Glen Burnie, MD, Pam Powell of Hanover, PA, Khrista Britt (Terrell) of High Falls, NC, Laura Rose of Mt. Gilead, NC and Adam Hussey; and his siblings, Karen Mayo of Pasadena, MD, Gail Bolton (Dave) of Annapolis, MD, Bruce Sowards (Robin) of Troy, NC and Billy Sowards (Kathy) of Mt. Gilead, NC. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
