He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Albert Hearst Newsom and Elon Green Newsom; his former wife Peggy Newsom of Troy, NC; his daughters, Tracy Garner (Max) of Troy, NC, Charlotte Nunez-Wolff (Miguel) of Chapel Hill, NC and Dana Nelson (Robert) of Troy, NC; his grandchildren, Hannah Butler, Sarah Butler, Christian Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Faith Nelson, Owen Garner and Joseph Garner; his sister Carol Ann Thrower; his nephew Jay Thrower; his niece Venetia Thrower Crook; and his pets, Anya, Vada and Maisy.
