He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Hoernke and Dorothy Hoernke; and his brother William. He is survived by: his significant other Joan Kulikowski of Archdale; his children, Wendy Spears (Tim) of Burlington, Scott (Kathy) of McKinney, Grant (Karla) of Burlington and Lance of Whitsett; his sister Elaine Crabtree of Arlington; his nephew Bryan Hoernke of Payson; and his grandchildren, Megan, Blake, Isabel Spears, Zoe, Sean, Isaac, Eli Taylor, Tyler, Seth Hoernke, Brooke Hoernke, Aidan and Ariel Hoernke.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
