He was predeceased by: his parents, George Dewey and Irene Blalock Clayton. He is survived by: his wife Rebecca "Becky" Gentry Clayton; his son Dwayne Thomas Clayton (Candace "Candy") of Timberlake; his siblings, James Wall of Charlotte, Dolly Long of Hurdle Mills, Geraldine Gooch (Wayne) of Durham and Emma Jean Gray (Jimmy) of Timberlake; his grandchildren, Colby Thomas Clayton and Heather Thompson; and his pet Buffy.
