He was predeceased by: his brother Harold Bender. He is survived by: his wife Ruth Woodruff Bender; his children, John Bender, III (Cindy) of Columbus, OH and Anne Bender Meyers (Michael) of High Point; his brother Ralph Bender of Houston, TX.; his granddaughters, Morgan Ryerson (Craig) of Statesville, Michaela Howell (Patrick) of Raleigh, Bryanna, Emily and Alyssa Bender of Columbus, OH; and his great grandchild Knox Ryerson.
