He is survived by: his wife Ellen Johnson Durmire Mitchell; his children, Tanya Mitchell and Shawn William Mitchell of Hiddenite; his granddaughter Kayla Sigmon of Chapel Hill; and his siblings, Jay Mitchell (Jearlean) of Hiddenite and Joyce Simpers (Norman) of Florida.
