She was predeceased by: her parents, Cecil Preston Allen and Velma Clark Allen; her husband Norris Barnes; her granddaughter Bethany Ward Widman; and her great grandchild William Jon Alden.
She is survived by: her children, Seldon Allen Ward of Tar Heel, Richard K. Ward (Mary) of Durham, Carl D. Ward Jr. (Karen) of Moorpark and Deanna Ward (Doug Queen) of Cullowhee, NC; her sister Barbara Campbell of Iva, SC; her sisters-in-law, Ellen W. Ashe (Winfred) of Cullowhee and Barbara Ward of Lawndale, NC; and her grandchildren, Carl D. Ward III, Michail Ward, Rachael Hilton (Phillip), Patricia Alden (Christopher M. Price), Jenine Ward, Bradley Ward, Taylor Ward and John Ward. She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
