He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Gaither Milton Thomas and Catherine Jones Payne; his wife Janet Kearns Payne; his granddaughter Janet Emerson Payne; his children, Richard Payne (Tami) and Rachel Jones (Dustin) of Greensboro; his sister Beverly Kivett (Jerry) of Pleasant Garden; his grandchildren, Austin, Avery, Dickie and Lizzie; and his close friend Lynda Allison.
