She was predeceased by: her parents, Robert Lee Speaks and Susie Severt Speaks; her husband Clifton H. Matthews; and her siblings, Edward Speaks, Laura Ashley and Ruth Dugas.

She is survived by: her children, Jeff Matthews (Gloria) of Salisbury, Susan Jones (Randle) of Stokesdale and Jane East (Jim) of Greensboro; her siblings, Louise Elrod of Greensboro, Lois Poteat (Jim) of Salisbury and Richard Speaks (Linda) of Mooreseville; her grandchildren, Jessica Belk (Andrew), B. Christian Matthews (Cordie) and Katelyn Jones (Hank Perkins); and her great grandchildren, Stewart Ruby Matthews, Cora Matthews, Brayden Belk and Renley Belk.
