Larry Vernon Obituary

STOKESDALE – Larry Vernon, 69, died on Saturday, January 23, 2021, at his residence. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2021 in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Daryl Law officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Social distancing guidelines will be followed and face coverings are required.

Mr. Vernon was born on October 21, 1951 in Rockingham County to the late William Archie Vernon and Emma Jean Hamm Vernon Ore. Larry was a lifelong truck driver, retiring from Doggett Construction Company after thirty-one years of service. He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard and traveling to explore his Indian heritage.

Larry loved the Lord and always wanted to make people laugh. His greatest joy came when he was spending time with his beloved wife and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sons, Kenneth Vernon and Daryl Vernon. Survivors include his loving wife, Betty Ann Vernon; son, Larry "Billy" Vernon, Jr.; daughter, Darlene Wood; special granddaughter, Kayla Thompson; special grandson and his "mini-me", Preston Peele; grandchildren, Stevie Wood, Dustin Wood and Ethan Jackson; extra special nieces; nephew, Steven Griffin; niece, Wendy Hennis; sisters, Vondean Chrisley, Dorothy Griffin, Rachel Johnson, Lou Ann Grady and Tammy Ore; brother, David Vernon; half-brothers, Sammy Ore and Dwayne Ore; sister-in-law, Brenda Kay Joyce; brother-in-law, James Vernon; daughter-in-law, Amy Ward and special friends, Amber Morris and Joanna Jackson.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday at funeral home and all other times at the residence. The family would like to thank Hospice of Rockingham County, especially Amanda Wilson, who became more like family rather than a nurse. Special mention is also expressed to Dr. Rakesh Alva and nurse, Sherie at LeBauer Pulmonary for their attentive care, as well as a big "thank you" to Bob Yates, Sr. of Yates Construction for providing a final ride to his resting place.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27357. Colonial Funeral Home in Madison is serving the family.
