He was predeceased by: his parents, William McKinley Matthews and Della Salley Matthews; his wife Virginia Pegram Matthews; and his siblings, Johnny Matthews, Myrtle Montgomery and Ruby Wilson.
He is survived by: his children, Katrina Pyrtle (Mike) of Stokesdale, Terry Matthews (Donna) of Kernersville and Timothy Matthews (Evelyn) of Stokesdale; his siblings, Judy Garmon of Burlington, Mary 'Billie Bennett of Kernersville and Daniel Matthews of Stokesdale; his grandchildren, Scott Matthews, Susan Smith (Andrew), Nicole Arnn (Harold), Zachary Matthews (Kaitlyn), Anienka Sanchez, William Sanchez and Jaoel Martinez; and his great grandchildren, Callie Smith, Catie Smith and Samantha Matthews.
