He was predeceased by: his parents, James Franklin Gentry and Lorene Tucker Gentry; his siblings, Lillian Cromer, Vallie Whitt, Wayne Gentry, Darris Gentry, Rocky Gentry, Bill Shreves, Bill Hand and Gordon Tucker; his daughter Lynn Gentry Tilley; his grandson Derick Sheppard; his great grandchild Jordan Sheppard; and his nephew Grant Gentry.

He is survived by: his wife Donola Barnes Gentry; and his children, James D. Gentry, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Keith Barnes of Madison, NC, Robbin Martin of Stokesdale, NC and Mary "Annie" Brewer (Rob) of Kernersville, NC. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and many loved nieces, nephews and sister-in-laws.

Memorials can be made to the Palestine United Methodist Church, the American Heart Society, or the American Cancer Society.
