He was predeceased by: his first love Millie Johnson Thomas; his daughter Bonnie T. Birdsall; and his wife Audrey Reese Thomas. He is survived by: his children, Ben Thomas (Dena) of Greensboro, Bradley True of New York and Jill Thomas of Statesville; his grandchildren, Eli Alexander Birdsall of Tampa, FL and Emma Breslin (Jason) of Madison, N. C.; his great grandchildren, Uhtred, Theron and Ygritte; his daughters, Sara Plyler (Matt) of Charlotte and Meg Powell (Than) of Chapel Hill; and his grandchildren, Hayden, Zach, Cate and William.
