He is survived by: his wife Ruth Ann Bates; his children, Melissa Bates Matthews (Matthew Gaither) of Olin, NC and Adam Bates (Nicole) of Statesville, NC; his stepson Troy Perdue of Bluefield, WV.; and his grandchildren, Joshua Beckett, Taylor Bates, Zackary Matthews and Brian Perdue.
