He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy B. Harwell and Lena Hefner Harwell; his brother Tommy Harwell; and his grandsons, William and Thomas Harwell.

He is survived by: his wife Judy Hinson; his sons, Wayne Harwell, Jr. (Marla) and Terry Harwell (Alice); his sister Sherry Lackey (Steve); and his siblings-in-law, Lucille Harwell, Sue Hinson, Willa Mae Hinson and Jerry Hinson.
