He was predeceased by: his parent Edwin Simeon; his wife Georgia Estelle Watkins Barnes; and his sisters, Iris Cox, Ida Lee Lockridge and Nell Fetner.

He is survived by: his parent Alice Elise Lee Barnes; his children, Teresa B. West (Lee) of Mint Hill, Gerald Garth Barnes of Stanley and Leslie B. Singleton (Buzz) of Stanley; and his grandchildren, Iva Elise Barnes, Emily Pendleton Barnes, Luke Christopher Barnes, Michael Phillips West, Hallie Rhay West and Logan Dale Singleton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford Orphanage or Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte.
