He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Audy Buchanan and Viola Silver Buchanan; his siblings, Audie, Jr., Paul Buchanan, Sr. and Mary Lee Duvall; and his grandsons, Corbin and Gabe Buchanan.

He is survived by: his wife Judy Wheeler Buchanan; his children, Richard Buchanan (Misty) of Spruce Pine, Allen Buchanan of Spruce Pine and Vicki Buchanan Whittemore of Graham, NC; his grandchildren, Ashley (Brooks), Kyleigh, Camden, EmmaLou and LeighLou; his great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Brody; and his sister Evelyn Hall of Harrisburg.
