He was predeceased by: his father Rufus Smith; his wife Deanna Saunders Smith; his granddaughter Candy Love Stockwell; his son-in-law David Jarrett; and his sisters, Helen Nifong, Lucy Beeson and Ruth Ann Smith.
He is survived by: his children, Wendy Smith of Thomasville, Lori Jarrett of Asheboro, Becky Stegenga of Trinity, Johnny Smith (Gena) of Sophia and Amy Kennedy (Mark) of Asheboro; and his sisters, Mary Jo Whitfield and Rachel Earnhardt. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Memorials may be given to Whitehall Evangelical Methodist Church.
