He was predeceased by: his parents, Hyman Dawson and Violet Chase Johnson; his brother Van Johnson; and his daughter-in-law Sonia Johnson. He is survived by: his wife Connie Lovett Johnson; his children, Ginger Johnson Bostic (Eddie) of Hookerton, Jimmy Dawson Johnson, Jr. of Hookerton and Doug Johnson (Tiffany) of Snow Hill; his siblings, Deborah Johnson of Hookerton and Kenneth Johnson of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Leanne Johnson (Brett), Michael Johnson, Victoria Johnson (Dillon Grant), Trey Bostic, Walker Bostic and Miracle Bostic; and his nephew Robbie Johnson (Trina) of Farmville. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
