He was predeceased by: his parents, James Luby and Lena McLawhorn; and his siblings, Tessie McLawhorn Dixon, Miriam Glen McLawhorn Edwards and William Edward McLawhorn.

He is survived by: his wife Louise Sugg McLawhorn; his son James Sugg McLawhorn (Kathryn) of Raleigh; and his grandchildren, Andrew James "Drew" McLawhorn of Greensboro, Parker Elizabeth McLawhorn of Raleigh, Judy Grant, B. J. Shingleton and Renee Chase.
