He was predeceased by: his parents, Shannon Donald Johnston and Pauline Gabriel Johnston; his former wife Lorraine Kraft Johnston; and also Leonard "Len" Johnston. He is survived by: his wife Fay Crouse Johnston; his children, Rick Johnston (Pam), Benson Smith and Vanessa Ward (Eddie); and his daughter-in-law Linda Johnston. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
