He was predeceased by: his parent Robert Horace Matthews; his son David Matthews; and his brothers, Jimmy Matthews and Billy Ray Matthews. He is survived by: his parent Annie Kate Norden Matthews; his wife Betty L. Matthews; his sons, Ervin "Pete" Lane (Pat) of Snow Camp, Thomas R. Clayton (Jacqueline) of Timberlake and Phillip Matthews of Yanceyville, VA; his brothers, Joseph Matthews (Shela) and William Roger (Phyllis); and his grandchildren, Jacob Elliott Clayton and Berry Michael Clayton.
