He was predeceased by: his parents, James Howard and Rosa Fleming Parker. He is survived by: his wife Hallie McLean Parker of Carolina Meadows; his children, Hallie Stewart Parker of Chapel Hill, Livingston, Edith Parker of Iowa City and James H. Parker III; his wife Jane Yokoyama of Asheville; his grandchildren, Samuel Kazuo Parker of Carrboro, David Michael Akiyoshi Parker of Berkeley, Emma Catharine Parker of Durham and Hallie Grace Huls of Chapel Hill; his sister-in-law Ruth Parker of Siler City; and also, Stewart Professorship, Hallie McLean Parker Professorship, David McLean Parker (Robert Huls) of Chapel Hill and Michael Fleming Parker (Maud Casey) of Saxapahaw. He is also survived by his parents, two brothers, and five sisters.
