He was predeceased by: his parents, Preston Shook and Carrie Hartsoe Shook; his wife Betty June Bass Shook; and his son Alan Russell Shook. He is survived by: his children, Joey Dean Shook (Barbara) and Sherrie Lawing (Chip); his sister Helen Rhinehart; and his great-niece Miranda Setzer.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Shiloh Methodist Church, 1648 Shiloh Rd. Claremont, NC.
