He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Allgood Johnson and Zorah Craig Johnson; his wife Cynthia Kay Tindall Johnson; his sisters, Ethel Mae Johnson and Ruth Alma Johnson; and his sister-in-law Hazel Tindall.
He is survived by: his son James Gary "Tinker" Johnson Jr. (Jamie) of Lawndale, NC; his grandchildren, David Johnson (Kim) of Grover, NC and Jennifer Melton (Josh) of Kings Mountain, NC; his great grandchildren, Makenzie Johnson and SaraBeth Melton; his siblings, R. A. Johnson (Kay) of Indian Trial, NC and Lyndall Mull of Greenville, SC; and his siblings-in-law, Phillip Tindall of Summerville, SC and Judy Wheeler of Durham, NC. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
