He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Perry and Linnie Shull McWhirter; his wife Carolyn McWhirter; and his grandson Camden McWhirter. He is survived by: his children, Owen of Chesnee, Alan (Lena) of Shelby, Colin (Kay) of Shelby and Laura Webb of Huntersville; his granddaughter Candice McWhirter; his great grandchildren, Matthew, Noah, Jaxon, Erin Bryant (John), Kendyl McWhirter and Breanna Webb; and his granddaughter Gracie McWhirter.
