He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Young and Bulah Smith Young; and his sibling Cayto. He is survived by: his former wife Ruth Edna Wallace; his children, Renee Young Belvin of New York, Nina Hooks (Randall K. Hooks) of New York, Greer Fields of New York, Larry Wallace Young of New York, Peter Young, Jr. (Yvette Nadine Young) of New York and Joel David Young of New York; his wife Mary DeGraffenreid Stewart; and his children, Robin DeGraffenreid Allen of Raleigh, Sherrod Stewart of Smithfield and Kenneth Stewart of Selma. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
