He was predeceased by: his parents, John Henry Malcolm and Mary Emma Fields Fitzgerald; his wife Betty Viars Fitzgerald; his grandson Eric Fitzgerald; and his siblings, William, Clarence, Cecil, Carlie, Johnsie Fitzgerald, Flora Andrews and Ethel Fitzgerald.

He is survived by: his children, Richard Lee, Carlton Isaac, Billy Duane Fitzgerald and Carolyn Craig; his grandchildren, Angela Corum (Tim), Jeremiah Deskins (Tabitha), Jessica Hairston, Kaecee Fitzgerald, Clay Fitzgerald, Terah Cloud, Jami Turner and Jason Fitzgerald; and his close friend Ann Prillaman. He is also survived by seventeen great-grandchildren.
