He was predeceased by: his parents, Burgin Gillespie and Dorothy Ledbetter Gillespie; his spouse Jackie Gillespie; and his sisters, Joanne Hawkins and Kaye Gillespie.
He is survived by: his son Wendell Gillespie (Denise) of Rutherfordton; his stepsons, Ronald D. Griffin (Judy) of Hendersonville and Rodney H. Griffin of Hendersonville; his adoptive son Steven Harrington (Tara) of Hendersonville; his stepdaughters, Melissa K. Childress (Chuck) of Hendersonville and Joy B. King of Gaffney, SC; and his siblings, Conley Gillespie (Cora) of Leicester, Wilma Edmonds (Ray) of Asheville and Carolyn Brookshire (Junior) of Leicester. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren.
