He is survived by: his wife Susan Callahan McGowan; his son William Rufus McGowan; his grandchildren, Will and Emma McGowan; his daughters, Katharine Gray McGowan and Harriet Elizabeth McGowan (Garrett Merck) of Banner Elk, NC; his grandchild Mackenzie Merck; his sister Vivian McGowan Johnson (Bud Johnson) of Raleigh, NC; and his nephew David Johnson.
