He was predeceased by: his wife Leona Heath Key; his parents, Linsey Key and Nellie Key; and his brothers, Elmer Gray Key and Bobby Lee Key.
He is survived by: his daughters, Pamela Tyson (Zan) of High Point, Mae Jackson (John) of Durham and Lori Cain (Andrew) of Forest City; his grandchildren, Alex Tyson (Melannie) of Pfafftown, David Tyson (Jessica) of Winston-Salem, Thomas Jackson (Kim) of Raleigh, Leigh Tyson (Davis Bateman) of Raleigh, Hunter Cain of Conover and Sarah Cain of Cullowhee; his great grandchildren, Olin Tyson, Tyson Bateman, Asher Jackson, Wesley Bateman, Keller Tyson and Selwyn Tyson; and his sister Ruby Joyce (Swanson) of Pinnacle. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.
