He was predeceased by: his parents, Elvis Monroe and Annie Maude Palmer Thaxton; his wife Sarah Raynor Thaxton; his sons, Kim Elwood Thaxton and James Edward Thaxton II; his siblings, Buck Thaxton, Todd Thaxton, William Thaxton, Margaret Ann Jeffrey and Betty Louise Pulliam; and his grandson Justin Thaxton.
He is survived by: his children, Mary Elizabeth Dennis, Angela Fowler, Harry Edward Thaxton, Tony Lee Thaxton and Ted Lee Thaxton; and his siblings, Phillip Wayne Thaxton, Donnie Joe Thaxton and Shelby Jean Wrenn. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
