He was predeceased by: his parents, Daniel Vance and Ruby Whitman Coates; his son Jeffrey Coates; and his sister Sharon Coates. He is survived by: his wife Holly Dernar Coates; and his children, Chuck Coates (Cynthia), David Coates, Angela Seeberg (Ron), Haley Spivey, Anthony Williams and Alex Williams. He is also survived by six grandchildren.
