He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Chavis and Carrie Bell Johnson Chavis; his brothers, James Alton Chavis and Walter Pernell Chavis; and his sons, Charles Chavis, James Oxendine and Lee Chavis.
He is survived by: his children, Allen Chavis (Bert), Larry Chavis (Mary), John Chavis (Ann), Mattie Lacy (William), Sabrina Isaac (Woodrow) and Teresa Ingram (Ronald); and his sisters, Carrie Cooper (Donald) and Mazie Owens. He is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren and fifty-six great-grandchildren; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
