He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Zebulon Vance Tarkenton and Lula Margaret Spruill Leary; his wife Rita Hassell Tarkenton of Roper, NC; his daughters, Chrystie Tarkenton Smith (Justin) of Plymouth, NC and Amber Tarkenton McMullen (Doug) of Jamesville, NC; his sisters, Cindy T. Coker of Roper, NC and Patricia T. Benditz of Louisville, TN; his grandchildren, Gracen Phelps (Jared), Ashtyn McMullen, Carter Stowe, Wesley Stowe, Robby Smith and Charley Smith; and his great grandchild Landry Phelps.
