She was predeceased by: her parents, Major Frederick Jacob Widman and Katherine Emma Heffleger Widman; her husband Dr. Needham Battle Carter; and her siblings, Frederick Jacob Widman, Jr. and Ruth Elizabeth Widman Marr.

She is survived by: her children, Mark Needham Carter (Tamara) of Nashville, Katherine Widman Carter Cole (Jeffrey) of Treasure Island, FL, Haven Elizabeth Carter Roughton (Lucien) of Durham and Allison McSween Carter Gundry (Queensland) of Victoria Point; her grandchildren, Evan McSween Carter, Carter Leigh Cole Fondon (Justin), Regan Alexis Cole (Matthew Graham), Caitlin Elizabeth Cole, Rylie Brienne Cole Stogryn (Jonathan) and Katherine "Kate" Sheridan Gundry; and her great grandchildren, Chaseleigh Cody Katherine Fondon, Magnolia Dawn Fondon and Dale Battle Graham. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
