He was predeceased by: his parents, King Hyman, Sr. and Emma Hyman (Nie Brown); his siblings, King Hyman, Jr. (Willie Lee Hyman) and Emma Hyman (Geraldine Brown); and his children, James Hyman, Jr. and Vonne Hyman.
He is survived by: his close friend Mary Johnson; his sisters, Areathia Winns of New York and Doris Godard of North Carolina; his son Travis Mercer; and his stepchildren, Alice, Rosa, Linda, Brenda, Maggie and Johnny. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
