He was predeceased by: his parents, James Paul Cockrell and Fannie Estelle Williford Cockrell; his siblings, James Glenn Cockrell and Wanda Robbins; and his niece Cindy Robbins.
He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Turlington Cockrell; his sons, Grady Allen Cockrell (Elizabeth) of Swansboro and Michael Eugene Cockrell (Wendy) of Beaufort; his grandchildren, Kyle James Cockrell (Micheala), Scott Ryan Cockrell (Shaina), Zachary Michael Cockrell (Kelly) and Rachael Nichole Cockrell (Quint); his great grandchildren, Sylas Jamie Cockrell, Peyton Lynn Cockrell, Ella Grace Cockrell, Riley Nicole Cockrell and Madison Marie Cockrell; and his niece Alicia Cockrell.
