He was predeceased by: his wife Doris Koonce Thomas; his son Ernest "Bubba" Edgar Thomas, Jr.; his parents, Jessie Thomas and Olive Thomas; and his siblings, Edward Thomas, Lila Sullivan, Marjorie Riggs and Dorothy Rackley.
He is survived by: his children, Charlotte Stringfellow (Robert) of Florida, Diane Gebhardt of Richlands, Gail Pylant (Herschel) and Michael Tyndall of Jacksonville; his sisters, Irene Wise of Maryland, Eloise Parker of Wilmington, Margaret Betts of Ohio, Patricia Mosior of Jacksonville and Lois Petelinker of Wilmington; and his grandchildren, Jessica Gebhardt, Jennifer Rich, Wyatt Tyndall, Herschel Pylant III, Lauren Hoss, Carrie Mullen, Matthew Stringfellow, Aric Thomas, Anthony Thomas and Ashton Thomas.
