He was predeceased by: his mother Essie Jake Blackwelder Melton; and his sister Goldie Huneycutt. He is survived by: his children, Joseph Melton of Richfield, Linda Murphy (James Sanders) of Richfield, Debbie Childress (Marcus Graham) of Perry, GA and Tina Baxley (Keith) of Pleasant Garden, NC; his special sidekicks, Tater and Pete; and his sister Lucy Browning (Max) of Glenwood, NC.. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren.
