Sally Ann Herndon Obituary
Sally Ann Herndon, 80, of 5061 Cornwallis Road, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
Sally was born January 13, 1943 in Erie, PA, was the daughter of the late John C. Shuhart and Nellie Hoppe Shuhart, and grew up in North East, PA where Sally graduated from North East High School.
After High School she moved to Jefferson, OH where she was a mother, homemaker, a long-time volunteer fire fighter and a Paramedic. She was also a long-time member of the Jefferson Garden Club.
Sally had many interests; she enjoyed reading, vegetable gardening, tending to all of her many varieties of plants and flowers and was an avid bird watcher.
She loved to travel with her husband Don crisscrossing the country from Alaska to Newfoundland, Canada, from Ohio to Florida, Texas and California and everywhere in-between. She enjoyed hiking through the forests, along the lakes and rivers she visited and all of the wildlife and scenic vistas she encountered along the way. She loved canoeing every chance she got everywhere she traveled.
Sally moved from Ohio to Turkey, NC, where she and Don bought a farm so they could be closer to her son, wife and grandchildren in Wilmington whom they dearly loved. Sally enjoyed the farm life.
A Funeral service will be held at 12 PM, Saturday, January 28th at New Hope Baptist Church in Turkey, NC, with Mrs. Tena Johnson officiating. Viewing will be held from 11 AM – 12 PM at the church and the family will receive friends immediately after the service. Interment will be held Saturday, February 4th at Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson, Ohio.
Survivors include; husband of 45 years, Donald Gene Herndon; sons; Scott Allen Rice and wife Charlotte Costello of Wilmington, NC and Brian John Rice of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Justin Rice, Austin Rice, Ava Lauren Rice and Caitlin Costello.
