He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Chavis and Maggie Jackson Chavis; the mother of his children Virgie Collins Chavis; his son Clayton Chavis; and his siblings, Leeromie Chavis (Bud), Henry Jr. Chavis, Albert Chavis, Ernest Chavis, Ronald Lee Chavis, Mary Callahan and Annie Emanuel.
He is survived by: his children, Barbara Chavis of Red Springs, Patricia Lambert of Maxton, Amy Oxendine Ward (Mark) of Shannon, Dr. Herman Chavis (Connie) of Lumberton and Don Chavis (Patty) of Rennert; his siblings, Shelby Jane Locklear of Lumber Bridge, Eyvonnie Pevia of Lumber Bridge, Lillie Mae Oxendine of Pembroke, Lora Ann McMillan of Rennert, Janie Ruth Scott of Maxton, Frances Locklear of Rennert, Sharon Locklear of Pembroke, Carlie Chavis of Shannon and Thurman Chavis of Shannon; his grandchildren, Dwayne Lambert, Susan Berry, James B. Lambert, Pat Harris (Ricky), Stevie Chavis, Melissa Chavis, Jonathan Chavis (Brittany), Adrienne Chavis, Brent Chavis, Meghan Jones (Michael), Chandler Chavis (Jessica), Christopher Weyant, Larissa Locklear, Sydney Locklear (Terry) and Ryan Oxendine (Santanna); and his close friends, Linda Oxendine, Anna, Bricy Munoz, Dan Harvey, Earl Lowery, Randy Jones and Bobby Dean Oxendine. He is also survived by 42 great-grandchildren and 19 great great-grandchildren.
