He was predeceased by: his parents, Sam Smith and Nellie Mae Smith; his son Chris Smith; and his siblings, Clifton Smith, Frances Palma, Sam Smith, Jr., Lin "Peewee" Smith, Dorothy Whitehead, Fred Smith and Marvin Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Debbie Shearin Smith; his children, Jeff Smith (Michelle) of Red Oak, David Smith of Boston, MA, Bailey Lancaster (Cody) of Pinetops and Greg Smith (Carrie) of Rocky Mount; his grandchildren, Trenton Smith and Kimberly Hall (Michael); his children, Braxton, Braylen and Mary Blaire Hall; his daughter-in-law Jamie Smith; his grandchild Walt Smith; his siblings, Frank Smith of Greenville and Louise Faulkner of Cary; and his sisters-in-law, Janice Smith, Janelle Powell, Ruth Smith, Ellen Bass and Beth Hogan (Dave). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews; and man's best friend.
