He was predeceased by: his former wife Patsy Brown Burgess; his wife Ruth Deese Burgess; his parents, William Emmett and Della Lineberry Burgess; and his siblings, Ethel Cox, Juanita Boone, Clarence Burgess and Herbert Burgess.

He is survived by: his children, Pamela Burgess Brown (Gary), Wayne Burgess (Donna) of Ramseur and Jeff Burgess (Barbara) of Ramseur; his stepchildren, Teresa Craven (Chris), Michael Langley and Mark Langley; his grandchildren, Cory Brown (Kelsey), Eric Brown (Katlyn), Kylie Shelton (Jack), Rachel Hairr (David), Adam Craven (Brittany), Caitlin Craven, Victoria Langley and Michaela Langley; his great grandchildren, Jackson Hoyt Shelton, Avery Shelton, Cole Brown, Aubrey Craven, Ricky and Teresa Locklear; and also Mandy Phelps.
