He was predeceased by: his parents, James Archie Johnson and Mary Gaston Atkins Johnson; and his siblings, Georgie Leggett, Neil Atkins Johnson, Alene Wiggins, James Archie Johnson, Jr., Mary Stewart Gillis, Tapley Ormond Johnson, Polly Parris, Lillian Beatrice Johnson, John'Jack'Lewis Johnson and William Hubert Johnson.
He is survived by: his children, Samuel A. Johnson, Jr., Gail Gunnells (Butch) of Raleigh, Mary Brown (Jerry) of Raleigh and Sharon O'Donnell of Cary; his grandchildren, Justin Brown, Kristin Brown Wooten (David), Jacob Gunnells (Carie), Sam Gunnells, Matthew Gunnells (Taylor), William O'Donnell (Amelia), David O'Donnell (Claire) and Jason O'Donnell; his great grandchildren, Kylie Wooten, Luke Wooten, Grayson Gunnells, Graham Gunnells and Rutledge Gunnells; his brother Benjamin A. Johnson (Nancy); and his spouse Wiloree Woody. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, January 8th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel (2911 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27603). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 8th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Montlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home (2911 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27603). A burial was held on Wednesday, January 8th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Montlawn Memorial Park (2911 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27603). A reception was held on Wednesday, January 8th 2025 at 2:30 PM at the Montlawn Memorial Park Funerals & Cremations (2911 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27603).
