It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Garry Atkinson of Durham, North Carolina, who passed away on January 10, 2025, at the age of 65, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his sister Vicky; his grandparents, Patsy "Ma Ma" and Rufus "Buh Buh" Hatch; his great-aunts, Sudie Coley Best and Pauline "Tiny" Parker (Leman); his great-uncle Andrew "Buddy" Coley (Geneva); his stepfather Reverend Mannie Cooper; and his aunt Josephine Coley.
He is survived by: his mother Dorothy Cooper; his wife Alma Atkinson; his children, Ayesha Sanders, LaKela Atkinson Webson (Mitchell), Garry Atkinson (Ayana) and Hakeem Atkinson; his grandchildren, Ayesha Sanders, Jr., Davis Atkinson and Rose Atkinson; his siblings, Sarah Atkinson, Johnny Ray Atkinson and Valerie Atkinson; his aunt Lillie Mae Coley; and his siblings-in-law, Keith Raynor (Lula Mae), Roger Raynor, Claudia Brown (Isaac) and Katrina Raynor. He is also survived by nieces, nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 22nd 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church (3703 Tryon Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606).
