He was predeceased by: his parents, George Curtis Hales and Mattie Mae Lunsford Hales; his wife Kathleen Harden Hales; and his siblings, Curtis Hales, L. G. Hales, Lud Hales and Louise Sanders.
He is survived by: his daughters, Sue Oxendine (Tim) of Aberdeen and Brenda Kellis (Harold) of Raeford; his grandchildren, Mark Lyle (Susanne), Yvette Lyle (Gregg) and Michael Lyle (Amanda); and his siblings, Seavy Hales (Lib) of Raeford and Eleanor Thomas of Raeford. He is also survived by ten great grandchildren.
