He was predeceased by: his parents, W. J. "Joe" Butler and Naomi Butler; his granddaughter Alyssa Butler; and his brothers, William J. Butler Jr. and Dr. James E. Butler.
He is survived by: his wife Joann McCormic Butler of Raeford, NC; his son David Butler (Cheryl) of Southern Pines, NC; his grandchildren, Kristina Dennis (Markus) of St. Pauls, NC, Hannah Butler of Southern Pines, NC and Joshua Butler of Southern Pines, NC; and his great grandchild Paislee Ray-Dennis of St. Pauls, NC. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
