He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Davis and Estelle Mae Hayden Nelson; and his brother Hugh Nelson. He is survived by: his grandchild Chris Kapp; his wife Bobbie Jean Evans Nelson; his children, Paul Dale Nelson, Sarah Richards (Tim) and Janet Kapp (Tim); his stepchildren, Darla Phillips (Kenny), Frank Mangum, Sherri Flack, Jamie Mangum and David Nelson (Rachel); his sisters, Peggy N. Oakley (Dwight) and Judy N. Lunsford (Bonnie Ray); his sister-in-law Janie I. Nelson; his nephews, Tim Nelson, Jeff Nelson and Charlie Oakley; his grandsons, David Kapp and Brian Kapp; and his great grandchild Matthew Kapp. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
